Sid Dickens T192
  • Loving several of these Sid Dickens tiles, especially Opaque T192. I collected them in the 1990s when they were $60 each rather than today's $90 each.

Music: Gave Away the Masters

From the August issue of Prospect Magazine regarding the move from LPs and cassettes to compact discs and music piracy:Prospect Magazine
Yet in some ways the CD contained the seeds of its own destruction. One of the few industry moguls to raise his voice against the digital format in its early days was the late Maurice Oberstein, an American who was latterly head of the Polygram UK (later Universal) label. "Do you realise we are giving away our master tapes here?" he asked at an industry event. At the time, everybody was too busy counting the cash to listen. But as the advent of recordable CDs kickstarted a black economy in counterfeits in the 1990s, Oberstein was proved right.

Music: Vinyl Appeal

Tenn. Plant Presses on With
Vinyl Appeal
:
That dusty stack of records in your parents' basement? They're not as retro as you might think. Many record collectors, DJs and music junkies still consider vinyl to be the gold standard of recorded music — scratches, pops and all.

Music: Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music

I started going through Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music and am very impressed. He has broken down electronic music into more sub-genres than I knew existed. Ishkur includes short descriptions of each, many audio samples of songs, and links to radio streams. The Flash interface is a bit cheesy but I highly recommend Ishkur's Guide.

Music: My Music Podcast Selections

When I chose an iPod over a new Archos MP3 player, it was for the user interface and small size. I had no idea that podcasts were going to consume so much of my use of the player. It has been a welcome surprise. While most of the podcasts I follow are technology or Lost related, below are the free music podcasts to which I subscribe.

If you'd like to try one out, drag and drop the "subscribe" link to your iTunes podcast page or right-click and copy the "subscribe" URL to use Protein's instructions. If you don't use iTunes, you could subscribe by adding the URL to your Netvibes homepage ("Add Content" and then "Add My Feed") to listen through their slick browser-based player.

illJazz Podcast: subscribe or visit the website, which describes this great one as "a podcast providing you with soulful sounds from the past and present. It's all about funk, breaks, old school hip hop, afro beat, disco, and house." Episode #2 is my favorite, featuring some great old school hip hop.

Solid Steel Podcast: subscribe or visit the website. As I've posted about before, I'm a big fan of the Solid Steel radio show. This podcast is a thiry minute excerpt of the weekly show. Great stuff.

DJ Connor Podcast: subscribe or visit the website. DJ Connor has "eclectic musical tastes, including hiphop, electronic, house, dnb, techno, trance, breakbeat, and triphop." I found this one on Podzinger when I was searching for podcasts with DJ Shadow tracks.

Coldcut Podcast: subscribe or visit the website. I've followed these guys since I heard the "Seven Minutes of Madness" remix of Eric B & Rakim's "Paid In Full" in the late 1980s and they're still kickin'.

Pete Tong Tongcast: subscribe or visit the website. Pete Tong is a long time club DJ throwing down the techno and trance (or whatever the kids call it these days).

Protein Podcast: subscribe or visit the website. They say their podcast "takes you on a musical mystery tour that travels the entire sonic spectrum. Soulwax to Snoop Dogg, Daft Punk to DJ Shadow." My favorite episode is the Andy Compton mix, "Floppy Disco '05."

Music: Remembering Pretty Hate Machine

I remember the first time I heard the Nine Inch Nails track "Down In It" from the album Pretty Hate Machine. The year was 1989 and I was in the DJ booth of a club called Rick's Place. DJ Eric 7 was kind enough to let me drop a blank cassette tape in the deck to record his set that night. The club was on the edge of the UNT campus in Denton, Texas along with other hangouts like the Flying Tomato and Otays (where Mike Cina and Jason Douglas used to spin).

After Rick's that night, my future wife and I stopped at a fast food place whose name inspired us to call the new tape Whatabeat. A few months later we saw Nine Inch Nails perform live when they opened for Jesus and the Mary Chain at the Arcadia Theater. I still love the NIN album Pretty Hate Machine more than fifteen years later, not that nostalgia colors my opinion at all.

Music: Inventor Of The Portable Personal Stereo Player

Unlikely trendsetter made earphones a way of life | CNET News.com:
SÃO PAULO, BRASIL--In the late 1960s, Andreas Pavel and his friends gathered regularly at his house here to listen to records, from Bach to Janis Joplin, and talk politics and philosophy. In their flights of fancy, they wondered why it should not be possible to take their music with them wherever they went.

Inspired by those discussions, Pavel invented the device known today as the Walkman. But it took more than 25 years of battling the Sony Corporation and others in courts and patent offices around the world before he finally won the right to say it: Andreas Pavel invented the portable personal stereo player.

Music: Holiday Music On SomaFM

Holiday Music on SomaFMOn a recent afternoon at home my wife requested I play some Christmas tunes - apparently she wasn't feeling Diplo's FabricLive Radio Mix. While I usually cringe at the thought of this season's soundtrack (except for the Waitresses' sublime "Christmas Wrapping"), I found SomaFM's Xmas in Frisko stream and really enjoyed it. The playlist includes Bing Crosby, the Muppets, Fiona Apple, Eric Cartman, Weezer, the Crypt Keeper, Elvis, the cast of Star Wars, Bruce Springsteen, Sha Na Na, and George Michael along with the unexpected "I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus" and "The Nine Days of Kwanza". They occassionally include a politically incorrect joke or obscenity so it may not be safe for listening at the workplace or with your children. Even though I don't typically like Christmas music, SomaFM's Xmas in Frisko is a lot of fun.

Music: Konono No. 1

Konono No. 1The NY Times describes Konono No. 1:
He played traditional music on the likembé, a 'thumb piano' constructed of thin metal rods attached to a resonator box. When performing outdoors with his group of singers, percussionists and other likembé players, it was tough to compete with the street noise. So he fashioned instrument pickups using automobile alternator magnets and amplifiers using old car radios, and sent his music out over salvaged metal public-address speaker horns.

The sound, not surprisingly, was distorted. But it was an appealing distortion, giving his hypnotic music a raw, electric quality. And the conical loudspeakers, or 'lance voix' (voice-throwers), proved more effective than anyone expected.
Crammed.be has pictures of the men and their instruments along with a sample MP3 (labeled "extract" at the bottom of the page).

Music: Depeche Mode Violated

Download the remix project Depeche Mode - Violated:
Depeche Mode's 'Violator' album was short by most standards, but it was the quality not quantity that made this album a classic. 15 years after it was first released, and as a celebration of a brand new Depeche Mode album, 'Playing The Angel', this is a new spin on an old favourite. A mixture of covers, mashups and remixes for your listening and possibly dancing pleasure.

DJ Matt Hite presents a house mix called Spinbeats:
I've been an avid spinner (the cycling kind) for the past year. My instructor, having taught spin classes for the past 5 years, has decided to move on to greener pastures. He wanted to go out with a bang, so he asked me to put together a special mix CD to be used for the routine during the last class.

Music: Introducing the Instant Tribute

From the New York Times:
Our post-postmodern era of mash-ups, music blogs, file sharing and near-instantaneous distribution, however, has given rise to a new phenomenon: a certain species of indie bands is covering their peers' brand-new songs - in those first heady days of release when the songs seem to be playing in every cafe and club, or even earlier, before they've made an impression at all.

Rolling Stone reports:
Rock radio stations might be changing formats just as the music is beginning a renaissance. A new wave of bands including the Killers, Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand are gaining play on stations across the country. 'Five years ago, I stopped listening to radio completely,' says Franz Ferdinand bassist Bob Hardy. 'Now there's dozens of new bands I'm keen to hear. It's all just part of the natural cycle of music.'

Music: Modest Mouse, Grand National, Midlake

  • I've discovered Modest Mouse's first two albums just a few years later. They're often compared to the Pixies.
  • The debut Grand National album has an 80s retro rock sound. The harmonies and Reggae riffs on many tracks are reminiscent of early Police. Some of the guitar and bass riffs remind me of an old new wave favorite of mine, New Order.
  • It is always fun to hear bands from Denton, Texas make some noise. Midlake's debut is tough to describe - you'll just have to check out the audio samples. Maybe they're a more subdued version of The Polyphonic Spree - another North Texas band.

Music: Citizen Cope

Citizen Cope's second album, "The Clarence Greenwood Recordings," is a polarizing album. I've read reviews that trash it and others that say it's great. I think it's great. Billboard agrees, saying his album his highly recommended and that his style is:
All-inclusive with hints of reggae, shades of hip-hop, allusions to Memphis soul, a sprinkling of Latin jazz percussion and even a clopping country lope.

The album sounds like a slower, blues inflected Maroon 5 and includes appearances from Carlos Santana and Me'shell Ndegeocello. Check out the audio samples on Amazon.com.

Music: Solid Steel

I love the long-running radio show Solid Steel, originally created by the master cut-n-paste DJs Coldcut and now featuring many great guest DJs. Go to NinjaTune.net for the latest Windows Media stream and tracklist.
From its inception Solid Steel presented arguably the finest and most diverse selection of music to be heard on one radio show. The emphasis is on mixing many styles seemlessly, from jazz to electronic oddities, from hip hop to poetry. There are no records or styles deemed unnacceptable, even a children's story has featured in one particularly wigged out show. Another unique element is the way 100's of spoken word samples are used to tie the music together, a style often imitated but never bettered elsewhere on radio. Each mix becomes a mini masterpiece.

Music: iPod Ubiquity

OK, I understand the iPod is the hottest digital music player out there but Karl Lagerfeld's obsession has gone over the top:

Couture maven Karl Lagerfeld's iPod collection is up to 60, coded in the back by laser etching so he can tell what's on them. "It's the way to store music," he says. Lagerfeld's tribute to the iPod is a $1,500 Fendi pink copper rectangular purse that holds 12 iPods.

The Newsweek article is titled iPod Nation. I have a severe addiction to my Archos player. I upgraded it to 60GB for music and file backups.

Music: Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple hasn't released an album since 1999's "When the Pawn..." (one of my favorites). I'm disappointed to see her upcoming album has been shelved according to her producer, Jon Brion, in a Rolling Stone interview:

Sony has yet to find the magic song on Brion's latest production, Apple's new record. The album has been finished for months but sits on the shelves at the label as, Brion says, execs search for a single."

A leaked MP3 called "Extraordinary Machine" can be found with a quick Google search. It is a cool song but not exactly ready for the radio - it is too quirky for the masses. But I like it.
